Language barriers to effective communication with Ukrainian women

I just discovered your blog because I met a Ukrainian woman on line on a dating site, but not a Ukrainian dating site. We have exchanged letters and I have been careful to avoid scams. So far so good. She hasn’t asked me for anything. All communication has been about our personal lives.

She doesn’t speak English and I, of course, do not speak Ukrainian or Russian. She lives in Mykolaiv, where Russian is spoken. I am concerned about the language barrier. This woman really seems to like me. I have offered to learn one of her languages and she recommends that if I decide to study one, it should be Russian. I’m willing to do that but it will be difficult. My question is are Ukrainian women dedicated to learning English, typically? I mean the Ukrainian women who are looking for American men.

By the way, Madame Tymoshenko has tremendous beauty and brains!! I understand the charges she faces and I hope they are false. But the woman holds a Ph.d in economics and degrees in economics and engineering? Wow! Who said blondes are dumb? She’s a lot smarter than me!

Ever hear of Victoria Zdrok, Ukrainian model (also a blonde), former exchange student? She became an international law attorney and also holds a Ph.d in Psychology. She is a beauty with much higher intellectual ability than I, Wow!

Hello Jeff,

Surely, language ability may act as a barrier to effective communication with a Ukrainian or Russian lady. And you are right guessing the language barrier cannot be ignored by the partners because an open communication and understanding are keys to a happy intercultural relationship. Since the modern world is more like a ‘Melting Pot’, intercultural relationships have become normal than exceptions. As the concept of global village is taking over, cultural, lingual and behavioral differences amongst people are blurring away gradually.

Ukrainian women who look for a Western man know that they have to learn the language of their future husband. The fact is that women in Ukraine do not go ofter abroad, thus they do not need to speak English in their every day life. Thus, many people in Ukraine do not speak any foreign language.

Here are a few tips how to overcome language barriers in a relationship with a Ukrainian woman:

Tip #1: You can use facial or hand gestures to make your lady from Ukraine understand you. Electronic translator devices are also available nowadays which will instantly translate your language to hers. However a machine can always translate the words but not the emotions.

Tip #2: Search over the Internet and find out about Ukrainian culture and background (e.g. the Ukrainian Dating Blog and Ukrainian Dating Stories). Learn and memorize some important phrases in her language and use them appropriately. Certainly she will be touched with your sincerity and effort.

Tip #3: You can always use an interpreter although it sounds a real turn-off to me! Seeking help from a third person can be really dissuading especially for a lady.

Although learning Russian is always tough, things get easier with patience and hard work; especially when you learn it from a loved one. Spend some time communicating with your partner in her language and ask her the meanings for certain phrases she uses in her conversation with you or others. Make a note of the meaning and try to use them while speaking with her.

Even if you do not become a great speaker of the foreign language, you can at least understand what she is talking about. Finally love has a common language spoken through eyes and body language. Till the time you find a feasible resolution to the language problems, try the language of love and you won’t regret it.

P.S. I am also blond but not dumb! I studied language and culture at the University of Frankfurt
There are many clever women in Ukraine (not just beautiful)!

I hope I could help you! 🙂

Thanks Krystyna for those lovely suggestions! I think in personal communication, expression and gestures can be a great help. Language barriers are complex but then the innocence of smile and honesty of tears speak louder than anything.

Dear Jeff, try to be direct, simple and slow with your message. You can also go for visual message, I am sure it will be a great help. Rest, Krystyna has clarified everything 🙂
